WANT! High Fidelity Style
Given the current stagnancy of our lives, binge-watching is at an all-time high. My recent binge is Hulu’s High Fidelity staring my long-time girl crush Zoe Kravitz as the snarky broken-hearted music snob lead character, Rob. This clever film to TV reboot not only has a soundtrack to satisfy most music lover’s taste with the type of tunes you forgot you loved but also fashion junkies can celebrate Rob’s wardrobe which nails a covetable mash-up of effortless ‘90s unisex style complimented by the backdrop of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I love that Kravitz delivers some of the same introspective moods as the original male character played by John Cusack in the 2000 High Fidelity film. And, she does so without compromising a female perspective which, in actuality, embraces both femininity and masculinity as conveyed by her entire wardrobe. We all can relate to dressing for our moods. Collectively, Rob’s ensembles are cleverly made up of a handful of Hawaiian shirts sometimes worn under a long leather jacket, Gucci loafers, platform boots, vintage band tees, a surprisingly fabulous lavender cargo pant and more, all thrifted by costume designer Colleen Atwood (episode 1) and Sarah Laux (9 episodes) with a few of Kravitz’s personal pieces mixed in. Naturally, Kravitz emotes her usual cool style with little effort, and it’s easy to get caught up in how she can make brokenness so beautiful. I mean she is the new Catwoman. For this month’s WANT! Fashion Editor Picks, in homage to the show’s ‘Top Five Heartbreaks’ mantra, I put together a list of my top five Rob inspired finds. Now I just need to open a record store!
