A Pink And Red Pictorial, Featuring Brooke Lyons

PhotoBook’s current cover story features actress Brooke Lyons, who plays Kate in “Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector”, a psychological thriller based on Jeffery Deaver’s Lincoln Rhyme detective novels.  Kate is a forensic scientist on Lincoln’s elite task force. Check out The Bone Collector on Fridays at 8pm on NBC.

The cover feature highlights color trends for spring with flame scarlet and coral pink as we move away from winter and leap into warm and vibrant colors.  Brooke is vibrant, full of energy, and embodies a warm and breath of fresh air that Spring gives us.

Brooke, who is six months pregnant at the time of the shoot, looks radiant in this story.  She describes motherhood as being what she is most proud of.  As she is about to have her second child, her son “is pure magic, and being his mother is the greatest honor of my life”.  This reminds me that, at NYFW last February, I saw mothers with their newborn child in the audience at shows. Rebecca Minkoff’s collection reviewed in PhotoBook highlights inclusivity, which embraces the simple fact that all bodies are beautiful and worthy of positive attribution.  Rebecca Minkoff’s show highlighted motherhood and fashion.

1. Where are you from?
Connecticut.

2. Where do you live?
Los Angeles & New York.

3. Profession or Activities?
Actor.

4. At what age did you start wanting to do this job?
I started acting in college; I must’ve been 19 or 20. I was a dancer first and I started in ballet class at age two, so I’ve been telling stories through performance my whole life. It’s something I’ve always felt called to do.

5. What kind of movie do you like to see?
Anything character-driven, whether it is drama or comedy, thriller or romance, high or low concept. I don’t discriminate. I just need to be transfixed by the characters within the first few minutes in order to go on the journey with them. I love The Shawshank Redemption, Junebug, Coming to America, Wayne’s World,
The Wings of the Dove, and Parasite. Genre doesn’t matter. I just love great stories. And, lately I’ve loved seeing more great stories about women.

6. What kind of movie / role do you like to play in?
I’m drawn to intelligent, capable characters who feel a little dangerous, either because they’re bleeding past the edges of what’s acceptable or because you’re never quite sure what they’re going to do next.  And, I love playing contradictions: the perfectly polished person who’s actually crazy, the familiar friend with a secret.

7. What’s the best opportunity you received?
I don’t know that there’s a “best”. I believe you get the opportunities you’re ready for, and there’s something valuable to be learned from each.

8. Can you tell us about The Bone Collector and the role you play?
Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector is a psychological thriller based on the first of Jeffery Deaver’s Lincoln Rhyme detective novels. The titular character is a brilliant criminologist in pursuit of a dangerous serial killer, The Bone Collector, and what ensues is a Sherlockian game of cat and mouse. I play Kate, the forensic scientist on Lincoln’s elite task force. She’s exacting, precise, and the only person who can go toe-to-toe with Lincoln in the forensic world. Kate is curious, compulsive, and she doesn’t suffer fools.

9. If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
The Bone Collector.

10. What actors would you like to play with?
Well, I tend to fall madly in love with actors based on their most recent work that I’ve seen. Considering what I’ve been watching lately, the list would include Olivia Colman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mahershala Ali, Matthew McConaughey, Andrew Scott

11. Is it easier to play a character or to be yourself on stage?
Playing a character is much easier. To be clear, playing a character is not easy. It involves imagination and research, building that character’s life and story in incredible detail, and adapting your face, voice and body to faithfully inhabit the person you’ve created. But being yourself? That’s way more vulnerable. There’s nothing to hide behind.

12. What are you most proud of and why?
My son. He’s pure magic, and being his mother is the greatest honor of my life.

13. What do you think is the key to success in your field?
Three things spring to mind:

Perseverance; working in entertainment feels like a game of attrition.

Authenticity; being brutally honest and staying true to yourself, even in a business that often asks you not to.

Resilience; if you fall down, get back up. If you feel bored, give yourself permission to change. Remain flexible and fluid.

14. What is next for you?
Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, which airs Fridays on NBC, is also available for streaming on the NBC app and Hulu. We love making it and are so grateful to our loyal fans for watching. It’s an exciting ride, and the story will give you chills as the season unfolds.

I love you and you’re doing great.
