What drew you to the music industry, and specifically Rap?
I grew up in a Hip Hop home. Music has always been the center of my life, whether it was, dancing, writing, performing or rapping. I always loved words and writing songs so it was almost natural for me to gravitate toward rhyming.

How has your father’s experience in popular 90s Hip Hop group Double XX Posse influenced your career?
I believe my father being in the music business was my biggest inspiration. I watched him be a part of a culture that I fell in love with at a very young age. I watched him stay up days in a row writing songs, going to studio sessions, and touring. I knew I wanted to do that same thing.

How has Missy Elliot’s mentorship helped you build your brand, and what has she taught you?
Having the opportunity to train under  a musical genius like Missy Elliott really groomed me for my journey in this business. She truly taught me a lot about the music game and definitely schooled me on the ups and downs of being a female in the industry. I appreciate her mentorship; many people aren't lucky enough to have a mentor so I always consider it a real blessing.

What was it like being in a talent competition like “The Four,” and how has it pushed you as a performer?
I believe “The Four” was truly a blessing to me, not only was it an amazing cast of talented artist, but the crew and producers were amazing as well. The show really pushed me as an artist and a person, and truly showed me the amount of talent and strength I truly possess.

Since creating your production label, how have you had the time to balance performing with all the responsibilities that go into running such a significant operation?
I am not gonna lie, it’s hard work! You have to focus and want to be great on both sides, meaning I put my best foot forward no matter which hat I’m wearing. Especially now, in today’s industry you not only have to be a good artist, but you have to be a good businessperson too. Overall, I believe the key ingredient is finding balance and wanting to be successful in both areas.

Discuss the significance of BANJI and why the acronym “Be Authentic Never Jeopardize Individuality” is so significant to its creation?
BANJI is an acronym for Be Authentic Never Jeopardize Individuality. This was a movement I spearheaded at the top of my career and I just encourage people to be unique, love the skin they’re in, and be unapologetic about it. In my career I had personally been faced with some tough stereotypes and, so, I am an advocate for originality.

How has your own battle with Second Stage Breast Cancer affected your ability to perform, and how have you been able to stay so strong during this difficult time?
I put all my trust in the Creator. There are days when I am affected by it, but most days I’m grateful for that journey and going through it only made me a stronger person and creative.

What do you have to say to those also struggling with Breast Cancer?
Never Give Up on yourself. It’s my main sentiment because it’s vital to your survival. I never gave up on the person I knew I could be, including reaching healing and to this day I make it a point to encourage myself even when no one else can.

As someone who has worked in many facets of the entertainment industry, including rapping, singing, dancing, producing, and even being the face of the new Alexander Wang campaign, which have you enjoyed the most?
To be perfectly honest, I can’t choose. I love them all for so many reasons; it’s hard to pick a favorite.

What kind of projects are you hoping to focus on in the future?
I am working on some really dope, new ventures in radio and television that I’m definitely excited about. I’m also a film buff, so I’m hoping to expand on some projects there as well.
