Sustainable Trends, In 2022, To Watch In Fashion
In 2022, we are looking forward to new beginnings, new opportunities, and, most exciting of all, new fashion trends. With this new year comes the chance to reinvent, to start new, and, if you’ve been longing to switch up your personal style and try something bold, then now is the time. The past year spent in various lockdowns spurred a new wave in the world of fashion, an era where individuals feel more liberated to try things they may have been too timid to try before. We are finally ready to shed our sweatpants for more daring garments. If the pandemic taught the fashion industry anything, it is that there is no better time than the present to express ourselves in our truest forms. With this sentiment in mind for the year to come, we can expect to see some, old nostalgic trends resurfacing as well as some new edgier styles becoming known. This is the year of celebrating self-expression, and there is no better way to do so than through the clothes we wear.
To ring in the new year, PhotoBook has compiled a list of some emerging trends for 2022. From blasts from the past to more contemporary burgeoning styles, this year is sure to be a dynamic age in fashion.
Balaclavas
Beanies had their moment; now it’s time for the balaclava to shine. From fashion’s favorite it-gal, Dua Lipa, to street style of New Yorkers, balaclavas seem to be everywhere right now. I mean, who doesn’t love an accessory with a practical purpose? Handmade brand It’s Memorial Day crafts the cutest balaclavas for the winter season, or if you’re more of a DIY individual, take your favorite scarf and wrap it around your neck and over your head balaclava-style.
UGGs Are Back!
For a moment there, it seemed that UGG’s time had passed. The shearling-swathed boots reigned supreme in the mid-2000s, but the hype around the beloved boots seemed to fizzle out. But with colder weather in full-swing, and with higher priority placed on comfort after the past couple of years, UGG is back to reclaim its throne. Our personal favorite is the UGG Classic Ultra Mini, as it can be quickly thrown on with sweats or dressed up a bit more with your favorite pair of jeans.
Larger Than Life Shoes (the chunkier and higher, the better)
Although UGGs are cozy for a day of running errands or cuddled up on your couch, for the few times we have gotten to leave our homes and enjoy cocktails with friends, a more elevated option is necessary. And we mean that in the literal sense, as 2022 will see some larger-than-life shoes. We saw the rise of the platform shoe in recent years, but this year calls for some dramatic height. From heels — GCDS’ ultra-platform pumps — to extremely chunky sneakers to Moon Boots, 2022 is the year of stepping up our shoe game.
Afghan Jackets
Take a glance at any esteemed fashion resale app, like Depop or Poshmark, and you’ll see these jackets surfacing with almost every swipe. Afghan jackets are the perfect addition to any winter outfit that needs a little more flair, and there is an abundance of vintage options out there. The puffer surely isn’t going anywhere yet, but it may need to share the spotlight this year.
Chunky knits
One of this past summer’s most prominent trends was crochet, and that will carry over even into the winter months through handmade knit sweaters, sweater vests, and knit accessories. Another new, emerging textile in the world of knitwear seems to be mohair. We can expect to see knitwear galore this year. Check out a local New York-based knitwear designer, Lindsay Vrckovnik, here.
Mini skirts
Miniskirts have transcended the test of time over and over again. Just when we think we have seen the last of them, they prove us wrong — and we’re not mad about it. Who doesn’t love a mini moment? Miu proved that extreme minis are extremely in for this year, with its SS22 Collection, which debuted an assortment of tiny skirts.
Leg warmers
The 80s are calling, and 2022 actually decided to pick up the phone. One unsuspecting trend that is making its way back into the foreground is legwarmers, and they are surprisingly the ideal accessory for those brisker days where you want to sport a skirt, but don’t want to leave your legs too vulnerable. You can usually find affordable leg warmers for a bargain at your local thrift store or if you are feeling crafty you can knit or crochet some yourself.
Varsity Jackets
Varsity jackets are on the rise this year and they’re definitely a great trend, as these multi-functional jackets can be worn casually, with athleisure, or even with a mini-dress for a “model-off-duty” look on a night out.
We hope that this year brings more color and joy than the previous ones, and that you may find a way to incorporate these 2022 projected trends into your personal wardrobe. Maybe you’ll try something new or revisit a nostalgic style that is now re-emerging — dust off your UGGs and pull out those leg warmers, 2022 we’re coming for you.
