College Survival 101: The Ultimate Essentials List
It’s that time of the year again. As the summer slowly comes to an end, the back-to-school season is fast approaching. Whether it’s your first time doing college shopping or you’re an expert returning for another academic year, college shopping can seem exhausting and stressful. Maybe you’re watching various videos to make a packing list or asking your older sibling’s help: being fully equipped for all the challenges can ensure your physical, social and academic well-being. Here is a guide of all the essentials that you need, from storage, bedding, and cleaning to kitchen and school supplies. We've got you covered!
Bedding Essentials
The biggest problem that students often face in dorms is extremely uncomfortable beds. We all know that good sleep is key to a productive and energized day. However, sometimes, it might be hard to sleep well when your bed feels like a solid rock. Invest in a good mattress topper and use a mattress cover to protect yourself from bed bugs and allergens. Get some extra pillows and decorative blankets. This way, you can add a homey touch to your bed and make yourself want to come back to it after the hard days of studying.

Storage Essentials
Another problem is not having enough storage. During my three years of being in college (including one as an RA), I have seen so many creative and mind-blowing ways of adding extra storage to dorm rooms. My favorite is hanging shelves: these take up minimal space but add lots of storage. You can fill them with your clothes, shoes, or other things. Another one is under-bed storage; I like to keep my suitcases under the bed and stuff them with off-season clothes or extra things. With good storage organization, you can keep your room clutter-free and clean.

Kitchen Essentials
When you become a college student, you slowly start mastering the art of making quick and affordable meals. For our own convenience, there are so many wonderful kitchen gadgets that you can use. Of course, mini fridges and microwaves are must-haves, but I recommend getting a kettle as well. You can make yourself a cup of tea, coffee, or warm some water for ramen; it’s a versatile gadget that can often come in handy. I also like having a French press to make coffee, if you like your coffee strong and bitter like I do, then a good French press will become your best friend.

Cleaning Essentials
Dorm rooms get easily cluttered and dirty. If you keep your room like that for a long period of time, the accumulated dust and bacteria can lead to various health problems. If you want to avoid these issues, get a compact vacuum cleaner to efficiently clean your small space. Get extra packs of disinfecting wipes and a pack of multi-purpose cleaners. For laundry, a drying rack is good to have if you don’t want to ruin your delicate pieces of clothing in dryers.

School Essentials
Despite the current trend on TikTok of people looking for the perfect school tote bag, I still think that backpacks are superior. After having two tote bags during my first two years of college, I finally gave up and got a sturdy backpack that I could overflow with everything. Your shoulders will forever be grateful for this small change.

Decor Essentials
With rooms getting dirty, it’s impossible to avoid odors or other unpleasant smells. My biggest tip is to have a reed diffuser in the room. This can be a low-maintenance and long-lasting method not only to keep your room smelling nice but also a stylish accessory. Make sure to bring some decor pieces that remind you of home for the hard days when you feel homesick. This includes photos, notes, etc. To make the room feel extra cozy, add various light sources.

College shopping can be an exciting period, and being well-prepared can help you start the academic year smoothly . Before you start your shopping, double check what is offered by your college and share some items with your roommate to cut the cost. Most importantly, remember that your college years are not only about academics, but the unforgettable memories and friendships that you will make. Make the most out of your time and stay safe.
