What was it like getting the role for such an iconic character?
It was surreal. I always knew God had something planned for my future, but never imagined it being this. It’s a true blessing and I am so grateful.

How does the reboot, “Bel-Air”, honor the original show?
It honors the original show by staying true to its heart and legacy, as well as by provoking thought and inspiring important conversations. It represents our culture in a positive and progressive way.

How important is it to have a show like “Bel-Air” that focuses on current issues, streaming today?
I think it is so important, especially in today’s world as it can be therapeutic. It is a much-needed nourishment for the culture.

How does “Bel-Air” tackle current issues that are prominent today?
“Bel-Air” tackles these issues head on and does not run away from them. The series takes current issues and weaves them in thematically to episodes in a thoughtful and sophisticated manor.

Was it difficult to get into the role of Uncle Phil since he was an already realized character?
I connected with the character and the script instantly, but Morgan Cooper (creator of “Bel-Air”) made it  clear to us from the beginning that we were all free to make these characters our own. It’s a completely different format from the original as it is a dramatic reimagining, so with that, we got to put our own spin on it to fit within these current times.

How did you take the role of Uncle Phil and make it your own?
I wanted to make sure that the essence of the original Uncle Phil was still present, but I also felt a dash of Barack Obama with his swag and charisma, as well as some edge and mysterious darkness was the perfect recipe to fit him in with these uncertain and unpredictable times.

Was there pressure when preparing for the role of Uncle Phil?
The weight and the magnitude of the role has never been lost on me. I was obviously well aware of the importance of this show and of these iconic characters, but my priority was to deliver and to be of service to the assignment/character. I also always believe that if the Lord takes you to it, he’ll get you through it. So I dug deep, focused and trusted I had all the tools I needed in my toolbox to get the job done.

What makes playing Uncle Phil so different from any of your previous roles?
Uncle Phil is America’s Uncle. He is a character I grew up watching and has influenced our culture in such a positive way. I am proud and honored to be wearing his shoes.

What are some of your interests outside of acting?
Outside of acting I like to play golf and enjoy the outdoors (hiking, training and fitness). I also love to travel and am constantly going to the movies or the theatre to keep me inspired.

What made you fall in love with acting?
I was a bit on the shy side as a child and fell in love with the theatre first. Being on stage was very liberating for me. I also watched a lot of television and movies growing up, Star Wars and Back to the Future were a couple of the films that really inspired me. I now shoot Bel-Air on the same Universal lot where Back To The Future was shot, which is a surreal full circle moment!

As a kid, I always wondered how could I be a part of that world? It just looked like so much fun! The idea that as a job I get to escape reality and create a fully fleshed human being who gets to live a life separate from our own is amazing and so fascinating to me.  I love my job.

As someone who is a veteran in the industry, what have been some of your favorite roles?
I have quite a few, but aside from Philip Banks, Admiral Robert April on Star Trek Strange New Worlds and Officer Nick Barron on 19-2 are two of my favorites for sure.

What currently inspires you in terms of your career and life in general?
I’m inspired by good, hard working and focused people. The possibilities that are available to you if you stay focused and believe in yourself are endless. Dreams do come true and it’s kind of crazy how much I’ve manifested in my life. Bel Air is a perfect example of that, where focus goes energy flows. I have always kept to my faith and that has inspired me a great deal. I love that I’m a part of an art form that has the power to create change and be a positive influence on people’s lives.

Are there any dream roles that you would like to play?
I’ve always been attracted to a James Bond, Jason Bourne, MI6 Secret Agent type character, and I would love to play a Superhero.  A dream would be for Ruth Carter to be taking my measurements one day. Shout out to Marvel.
