Alisha Wainwright

Alisha Wainwright has appeared in numerous screen productions, including guest roles on “Criminal Minds,” “General Hospital,” and “Lethal Weapon.” She is best known for her role as Maria Roberts on the supernatural drama series “Shadowhunters” and her current work starring as Nicole Reese on Netflix’s “Raising Dion.” The show, based on the 2015 comic by Dennis Liu, follows the widowed single-mother Nicole as she discovers her son has superpowers.

When did you first start acting?
My mom got me briefly involved in commercial work when I was a little kid. I didn't really start taking it seriously until my mid 20s when I was in California.

What has been your favorite part of working on “Raising Dion” so far?
My favorite part has been the fans. I love meeting little kids who are excited about the show. It means the world to me that there's a generation of kids that will grow up loving this show.

How do you connect with, and prepare for, the role?
I felt so connected to the character early on, but to prepare I have an entire system of character research I do so that I have the flexibility to play. I love getting detailed with characters, so if an improvised moment ever happens, I know my point of view.

What are you most excited for audiences to see this season?
I’m most excited for people to see that ending credits scene. I hope it makes people ask questions and think about what could be in store for another season.

What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the fact that, even though the world felt like it was falling apart in January 2021, we still managed to create a show and keep everyone on our set healthy.

If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing right now?
If I weren’t acting, I would probably be an executive assistant or an event planner. I love task managing and organizing schedules. I’m that girl who makes a detailed itinerary on trips.

What are your goals for the coming years?
My goals are to continue working on projects that bring me joy and help me expand what I think I’m capable of.

Do you have a dream role?
I’d love to be in something that lets me be funny. I think they call those comedies.

Who or what inspires you?
Traveling and connecting with new experiences inspire me. I feel like when you do the same thing around the same people every day you lose a little of that spice of life. I try to remind myself that consistency is comfort, but the occasional random trip or holiday makes me feel free.

What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?
I’d tell my younger self, keep doing what you’re doing, but take more time to pay attention to how good life is. And just order the fries.
