Booboo Stewart

1. Name.
Booboo Stewart.

2. Where did you grow up, and where do you currently live?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, and I still live in LA.

3. You’re in the new Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms, and you play Willie. What was that experience like?
Playing Willie was incredible. I love how free he is, how open he is, and how the layers of his past give his present time conflict.

4. What was your favorite aspect of the production?
I loved working with Kenny again and working with the cast and crew of the show. Such a fun group to be creating with.

5. Tell us about your very first acting gig. How would you say you’ve grown compared to when you first started?
The first time I was in a movie was for a movie my dad starred in called “The Jesse Ventura Story.” it was during a scene when my dad is slapping hands with fans as he walks toward the wrestling ring, and I was placed in the audience as a fan. I guess in terms of growing since then, I’ve actually been trying to go back. The idea of playing and getting lost in the process like you would as a kid is a great place to be.

6. You’ve played numerous roles from a very young age. Which role would you say was the most challenging in terms of getting into character?
One of the harder characters to play was Jay from Descendants. On the surface it wouldn’t seem like that would be my first answer, but especially in the first of our movies, the character Jay started in a place so far from what I was like in real life;  it was difficult to find. As the character grew so did I, and it melted together.

7. You also have a career in art. Tell us about it.
I’m actually at my art studio now, writing this. I call the studio “The Establo.” Art has always been a large part of my life. Ever since I can remember I’ve been drawing. I love colors, text, and textures. I’m very in to letting go of the idea of something being “perfect” and just scribbling to get the idea across. It’s a practice of not obsessing over perfection.

8. Where do you find inspiration for your paintings?
Inspiration for paintings/creating comes at random times, I could be driving, listening to a song, about to fall asleep. It comes from everywhere and everything. I just have to be ready to catch them.

9. How did That Band Honey come to be?
That Band Honey is a band. My best friend Davin Baltazar and I came up with the name . Having been in several bands beforehand, we just kept writing together and decided to record and release what we were doing. The music is a culmination of all of the genres we love: Pop, Funk, Dance, Reggaeton, and Alt Rock.

10. Among acting, art, and music, which area are you most fulfilled?
Making a movie still fulfills me the most. The community on a set is so strong when it’s the right group of people. I’ve really come to love the relationship that a great director and an actor can have on set. I love finding all of the ways an actor can get into a scene and being given a key to just dive into another person’s life. I also love what I can learn from this experience.

11. What is something not many people know about you?
I love cooking and trying new restaurants. I really do love cooking over the fire. We have a fire pit, and I grill for the family.

12. How have you been spending your time during quarantine?
I have been spending time with the family. At the Ranch we’ve been having family dinners, I love that.. I’m always in pursuit of creating and growing.

13. What’s next for you? Any exciting projects coming up?
Yes, actually, had a movie, “The Grizzlies,” come out on Digital platforms. It’s a beautiful movie that I’m extremely proud to be a part of. It’s a true story based in the Arctic. I have another movie coming out called “Let Him Go,” where I had the opportunity to work with Diane Lane and Kevin Costner--such incredible people.

14. Your motto in life?
I have so many little sayings that I say to myself, but one I learned from my Sensei in “Kitsune Kenpo” is “To command yourself is to command others.” I love that because often we think or say someone should do one thing, but we ourselves aren’t doing it. It’s a good reminder.
