The concept of the album, Brat, is for the party girls, the carefree girls, the “indie sleaze” girls as the internet has been calling it. With Charli XCX being the ultimate brat girl, we begin to see her beauty and fashion aesthetic trickle onto social media and into the aesthetic of girls all over. The messy, smudged eye makeup mixed with faded blush and lipstick gives an effect of partying all night and sleeping it your makeup – but in a cool, chic, and effortless way. This look, entitled “Brat Summer” makeup, has become popular with many girls due to Charli XCX’s influence.

Going from the “clean girl makeup” of Hailey Bieber to the “Brat summer” makeup of Charli XCX has created a new transition in the beauty world. It has resurfaced the 2000s “indie sleaze” makeup that we have seen on icons like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, and we are here for it! The transition from the “no makeup-makeup looks” to packed on smokey eyeshadow and faded lipstick just shows how trends can do a 180° flip. Moving back into grunge makeup, and seeing its transition to “party girl” makeup is great to see. It allows for trends to not only resurface, but be reinvented.

For the “Brat Summer” makeup, many have been creating their own interpretations of Charli XCX’s makeup look. The whole idea is to achieve an effortlessly “partied-in” makeup look. The eye makeup has become the prominent aspect of the trend, using smokey black or messy, colorful eyeshadow and thick black winged eyeliner. Many have paired this eye look with soft glitter eyelids and faded blush and lipstick.

The makeup trend coming back around is great for the newer generations to dabble in grungy, compelling makeup looks. As this trend travels around the internet, resurfacing looks inspired by the 2000s, it is open to experimentation. With the “Brat Summer” makeup trend, people are able to express their individuality with the trend, by adding bright pops of color or their favorite lip combination. While the nostalgia of the 2000s “indie sleaze” makeup is incorporated, it gives the opportunity to update it in new ways. It also moves into the idea of more authentic beauty standards, and not promoting the idea of being perfect but actually for self expression. And isn’t that the point of makeup in the first place?
