She has previously worked for Restless Network as the Digital Editor and covering features at Cosmopolitan UK. You will find her personality highlighted through her work, and you can normally find her “rewatching The Office, taking photos of her cat and complaining about the awkwardness of writing in the third person.” Charlotte is also proudly a part of the .1% of agencies owned by women.
You have an incredible list of writing contributions with major companies like Cosmopolitan and Bustle UK. How did you get your start leading up to these experiences?
I started pitching ideas about three years ago after reading an interview just like this one. I’d always loved writing and while I had a full-time job, I just thought it could be something to keep me busy over the weekends. It just grew from there.
Do you feel you have to hold back any thoughts or opinions when writing?
Generally, no. I’m really lucky that the editors I work with, from Cosmopolitan to Refinery 29, are always keen to champion writers
Do you try to be original when writing your pieces or do you typically try to deliver to readers what you think they want?
I love the idea of being original, but I doubt that I am! My favorite ever DM to receive after an article is something along the lines of ‘I’ve always thought this, but never knew how to say it!.’
What does literary success mean to you?
Oh! Great question. As someone who works in publishing, I think most authors just want people to fall in love with their stories, someone to see themselves in their characters. Or, even just to feel a little bit less alone.
Working under deadlines is tough sometimes. Do you have any tips or tricks on the best ways to overcome this issue that you have experienced?
If you’re a freelancer or you’re writing on the side, write when it works for you. I do most of my best work at midnight (I’m very much a night owl). I have a rule of never starting on an empty page. As soon as an article is assigned, I write the first two lines, even if I’ll never use them. It just means that I’m never staring at a blank page.
What is the best advice you can give to anyone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
As a freelance writer, other writers are your colleagues, not your competition. Get to know them, share ideas, ask someone to proof your work. Oh, and remember that good writers, read. And they read a lot. Whatever medium you want to develop your skills in, whether it’s articles or literature, take the time to read as much as you can.
Judging by your social media, we can tell you have a great eye for aesthetic and garments. How would you explain your style to others?
Bisexual disaster? I don’t really shop fast fashion, so when I buy something, it’s a big investment. I make sure that whatever I buy, I’ll wear it at least thirty times.
What would you consider your favorite accessories to be?
I honestly think you can never go wrong with a plain gold chain. It elevates pretty much any outfit.
PhotoBook celebrates equality and we love how you take part in LGBTQ+ issues. What led to your passion in expressing your thoughts on this topic?
As a bisexual person, I often find that representation can be a little bit lacking. I wanted to tackle topics that other people could find comfort in. So, I tend to focus on issues that specifically affect that part of the LGBTQ+ community. I think lived experience is essentia
Social Media.
