Fashion Illustrator Tamas Haizer Talks About Combining Art And Photography
Tamás Haizer, an Illustrator based in Paris, who has collaborated with photographer,
Mike Ruiz on several Illustrations, such as our current feature All Decked Out.
Check out this interview with the artist.
Where are you from, and where do you live now? How long have you lived where you currently do? What’s your favorite thing about where you live?
I originally come from Hungary, but I have lived in Paris for half of a year. Somehow I have always felt like I didn’t fit into the environment I lived in, and now I feel like I’ve found my home. France is a special, indescribable, atmosphere. As soon as you’re there you perceive it right away.
How did you develop your particular way of making art? Did you have any formal training? What is your process of making visual art like––what do you start out with when you set out to make a piece?
I also have a degree in painting and theatrical costume design, which proved useful in my recent work. When you design a costume for an actor, you always have to display every little detail of the character he or she plays. So, somehow I start illustrating based on this idea.
Who or what is most influential or inspirational to you creatively? Why do you make what you do?
I have a short answer to this. The most significant inspiration and influence on me has always been humans themselves. It is important that what I do aligns with both the specific brand and the personality of the model, otherwise the image would fall apart.
You frequently collaborate with one of our favorite creatives, Mike Ruiz. How did that relationship come about? What is it like for you when you work together?
It all started with Instagram. Social media is a great thing if you use it properly and filter out the content that makes you happy. Mike is a wonderful photographer, who is easy to work with. He is somehow able to focus on the souls of people in his photos and thus bring to the surface the hidden secrets of the soul, which very few see. That is real art.
What is your favorite collaborative project you’ve done this year with Mike? What made it most successful to you? What is your favorite part of working together? The most challenging? Is it done remotely?
My favorite project is always the next one, because there is a desire in both of us to constantly create something new. Fashion recognizes the beauties of the past, preserves them, but always strives to be better and different. Thanks to the digital world, together remotely is not a big challenge at all. In addition, I think cultural differences bring even more color to our work.
Where do you see yourself as an artist in five years? How about ten years?
I really enjoy where I am now, as every day is the beginning of a new adventure in which I meet new people. This is a huge inspiration to me. In fact, within five years, I want to be on a solid footing professionally, and within ten years it would be great if I became a well-known fashion illustrator.
What’s your biggest goal or dream in life, and why?
My biggest dream is to keep evolving, because you learn something new every day, and as long as you can progress, your journey is not over.
What are you most looking forward to in 2021? Post pandemic, once the borders reopen, what do you see yourself doing?
2021 will be a year of renewal. 2020 has given us the opportunity to learn more about ourselves, and, after the pandemic, we reconcile with each other and create a vision for the new millennium and how we look at ourselves and others.
What are you working on right now? Are there any new projects you have in the works you can tell us about?
I have been working 100% on my fashion illustrator career. This pandemic is not easy for anyone, but it is a perfect time to get to know yourself better and to plan your future thoroughly. I started working with some amazing fashion and jewelry designers. In addition, I place great emphasis on portraiture, and I have started collaborating with some Broadway actors and actresses.
What is your motto in life?
Give me time and I'll give you a revolution. This is a quote from Alexander McQueen, so just give me time and who knows...we'll see.
