Garrett Clayton
Actor Garrett Clayton has extensive experience in film, television, and on stage, and is best known for co-starring in Disney’s “Teen Beach Movie” and its sequel “Teen Beach Movie 2” in 2013 and 2015. Since then, he starred in “King Cobra” alongside James Franco, Christian Slater, and Alicia Silverstone. He performs alongside Emily Hampshire and Heather Matarazzo in the upcoming film“The Mattachine Family.” Each week, Clayton appears on Spotify’s Greenroom, a new platform from the streaming service that allows artists and fans can connect through live audio discussions. Clayton also recently worked on Paramount+’s new series “The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder,” based on the Nickelodeon series of the same name, set to premiere on March 31.
How did you find out about Spotify’s Greenroom platform?
During the quarantine, my husband, Blake, and I wanted to do something productive. We started a YouTube channel called “A Gay in the Life” where we interviewed queer people from communities worldwide. After a few months we ended up partnering with Spotify Greenroom to create a live radio show with the same name where we chat with listeners about all things LGBTQ+.
What has it been like to talk with fans each week on Greenroom?
It’s been pretty amazing! We get a lot of people coming into the room each week and telling us that they’re so happy to have a platform to discuss important issues in the queer community. The most encouraging part has to be the younger listeners who are excited to share their voices.
What is your favorite part of the platform?
The live on-air chat aspect of the room is pretty unique and interesting. We try to plan out topics each week but sometimes end up just talking with guests and sharing advice or stories. It’s really empowering for people to be heard, especially those who feel marginalized in whatever part of the world they live in
What has been your favorite part of working on “The Fairly OddParents”?
So many things. First of all, I was a huge fan of the cartoon when I was younger. So, I’m fanboying a lot. But the entire cast and crew are absolutely amazing, and everyone gets along so well, which is not always the case. It’s really been a dream job so far.
What are you excited for audiences to see in this first season of the series?
The show is a mixture of live-action and the original 2D animation, and showrunner Chris Nowak has really done a great job of seamlessly integrating those two worlds. I’m pumped for people to see it. Also, the writing for “Fairly” is so fun and witty, and some of the performances from my castmates are laugh-out-loud funny (looking at you Laura Bell Bundy and Lesli Margherita).
How do you prepare for a role?
I’ve worked in all sorts of genres at this point in my career, stage and screen: drama, comedy, horror, action, and everything else. I think that no matter what the role is or how different the character may be from your true self, it’s important to find a piece of yourself in that character, to bring some of your own lived experiences into the character you’re working to embody. It makes a difference to the final product.
What other projects do you have coming up that we should be excited about?
Besides my Spotify Greenroom show, “A Gay in the Life,” which is live every Monday night at 5pm PST, there are two film projects I’m working on later this year (details coming soon). It’s an exciting time!
Do you have a favorite role so far in your career?
I had a blast playing Pennywise in a “IT: A Musical Parody.” It was so much fun to play a creepy villain, and I had a blast working with a lot of friends of mine. Playing Link Larkin in NBC's "Hairspray LIVE!," alongside some absolute icons, was a highlight, too.
Do you have any dream roles or projects?
I would love to play a role in the new “Lord of the Rings” Amazon series, because that IP is so iconic. I also dream about playing a Marvel hero! X-Men’s Iceman is queer and I have the eyes for Bobby Drake!
What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
I had a rough go of it when I was younger, like many people. I think that I would tell my younger self: “Nothing’s ever going to be perfect or easy, and sometimes you’ll think about giving up. But don’t. You’re so much more than you could imagine. Stick it out and hold your head high. You’re gonna do great things.”
