Golden Globes 2023 Red Carpet

After last year's hiatus, the Golden Globes were back to being hosted live and in-person on January 10th, 2022. With a year to prepare, the stars put their all into their red carpet looks. While the Golden Globes celebrates both TV and film, PhotoBook celebrates fashion on the red carpets.

PhotoBook’s Top 5 Best Dressed

Jessica Chastain in Oscar de la Renta styled by Elizabeth Saltzman

Jessica Chastain’s delicate hand-embroidered spiderweb dress containing sixteen thousand crystals made her the shining star of the night. With her hair pulled up and minimal makeup and jewelry we could focus on the amazing details of the gown.

Tyler James Williams in Amiri styled by Ashley North

Winner of Best Supporting Actor in a TV Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary, Tyler James Williams stood out in a departure from the classic tuxedo usually seen on red carpets. The relaxed fit of the cropped blazer and flared trousers were a welcomed breath of fresh air.

MJ Rodriguez in Balmain styled by Wayman and Micah

Just one day after it went live, MJ Rodriguez debuted Balmain’s Pre-Fall 2023 collection on the red carpet. Last year, Rodriguez became the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe, but there was no ceremony. This regal gown was the perfect way to finally receive her standing ovation for her history-making performance in Pose.

Angela Bassett in Pamella Roland styled by Jennifer Austin

In another history-making win, Angela Bassett took home the Golden Globe for Supporting Actress in a movie for Blank Panther, making her the first actor to win a major award for a Marvel film. While at first glance, the gown may seem simple, the real drama comes from the open back and crystals cascading from the halter. This look was perfection from all angles.

Hilary Swank in Prada styled by Thomas Carter Phillips

Hilary Swank’s Prada gown shows that sometimes less really is more. The perfectly tailored emerald green gown’s only embellishments were the black shoulder bows that cascade down into a train. But perhaps the best detail is the most practical: pockets.

PhotoBook’s Top Brand

Gucci

While this year’s Golden Globes had a wide variety of looks on the red carpet, one brand stood out the most. Gucci dressed nine celebrities for the awards but the four best looks came from nominees Jenna Ortega, Diego Calva, and Daisy Edgar-Jones as well as winner Julia Garner. From Garner’s frothy pink gown to Calva’s perfectly tailored green suit, Gucci made the red carpet their own.

PhotoBook’s Top 5 Best Stylists

Christina Joy Pacelli styling Laverne Cox in vintage John Galliano

One of my favorite things to see on the red carpet is a vintage gown and while this 2007 John Galliano piece may not be vintage quite yet, the archival piece makes Laverne Cox look straight out of Old Hollywood. Stylist Christina Joy Pacelli also noted that most of the jewelry Cox wore is from the 1910s and 1920s so this look was just as sustainable as it was gorgeous.

Ivy Coco Maurice styling Sheryl Lee Ralph in Aliétte

Sheryl Lee Ralph took home yet another award for her role in Abbott Elementary wearing this stunning purple embellished gown. The matching makeup and sleek hair were the perfect addition to such a statement piece. But what makes this look extra special is knowing that Ralph’s stylist is her daughter. Talent definitely runs in the family!

Kevin Michael Ericson styling Sepideh Moafi in Amir Taghi

Iranian-American actress partnered with designer Amir Taghi and artist Milād to pay tribute to those in Iran. The high slit represents a woman’s freedom of expression and the poppy represents those whose lives have been taken from them by the regime, some even having their names written on the flower itself. Seeing Moafi use her time on one of the biggest red carpets shows the true power of fashion.

Jordan Johnson Chung styling Michelle Yeoh in Armani Privé

While the internet debates if necklaces have become obsolete on the red carpet, we can’t ignore Golden Globe winner Michelle Yeoh’s Moussaieff’s diamond necklace that perfectly complements her fully embellished Armani gown. The stunning white diamonds against the deep midnight blue resemble a starry night sky, a perfect choice for a star as big as Yeoh.

Ilaria Urbinati styling Barry Keoghan in Louis Vuitton

Barry Keoghan’s monochrome pastel blue suit was a refreshing change from the usual dark suits on the red carpets. The cropped jacket and unique tie kept the top half light while the chunky-soled boots grounded the bottom half. This perfectly tailored look that shows simplicity can be just as exciting and innovative as anything else.

Overall, I think the Golden Globes 2023 red carpet was the perfect mix of new and creative looks as well as a nod to the classic Hollywood looks of The Golden Age. This red carpet makes me even more excited to see what the Oscars bring.
