Inde Navarrette
Inde Navarrette’s first series role was Veronica on the Snapchat series “Denton’s Death Date”, an adaptation of Lance Rubin’s novel “Denton Little’s Deathdate” following a high school student who discovers his death date is two days away. Since then, she has become known for her recurring role as Estela de la Cruz in season 4 of Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” and her main role as Sarah Cushing ( now Sarah Cortez, in the series Sarah takes her parents original name to honor her heritage) in the CW’s DC Comics adaptation series “Superman & Lois”. The series follows Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s return to Smallville with their two sons. Inde’s character Sarah is the daughter of family friend Lana Lang and the love interest of Clark and Lois’ son Jordan. The series will finish its second season in June 2022.
How would you describe your “Superman & Lois” character Sarah?
Sarah’s personality is like a Rubik’s Cube. Depending on how you twist her, you’ll always get a different side. She’s soft and sensitive to the core, she cares so much that it hurts, and this season we see her hurt more than she has before. Which might have caused her to hurt in return but no matter what she doesn’t let it turn hard or bitter. Though I do have to say it might change if anything else happens, there is only so much a kid with a spirit like hers can take.
Are there ways that you see yourself in her character? If so, how has this helped you connect with and portray the role?
I just try to remember what it was like as a young girl, which isn’t so hard. I mean it feels like just yesterday. So, bring up that ugliness which is puberty and first loves and school is quite exciting to play when its already written for you.
How have you seen her character develop throughout the series so far? Do you have any goals or hopes for her future?
Sarah’s relationship with her father gets sucker punched. Being the one to firsthand learn that your father has cheated on your mom leaves such a scar on, not only that relationship, but future ones as well. I’m not too sure what’s going to happen next season but I hope that Sarah gets to address that trauma at some point.
What was your familiarity with DC superhero stories like before the series? What has it been like to be part of telling a story of such iconic characters?
Apart from Cartoon Network’s DC shows or Harley Quinn I really had no knowledge of anything involving DC, especially Superman. So now I find myself in rabbit holes on Superman lore. It takes up too much of my time.
Do you have any goals for the coming years? With whom would you like to work?
I can’t wait to see what these next couple of years bring, I’ve met wonderful people through this business and I would be enthralled to work with so many of them. On a fun, personal note this next month I’m going to start Twitch Streaming because when I’m bored at home I play games anyway. So, why not do it with an audience? Give the people free entertainment.
Did you always know you wanted to act professionally?
Always, I have never seen myself doing anything else. I would stay up and just absorb movies like a sponge and then I would stay up even longer redoing the scenes in my head but with me as the main character. I still do it constantly.
Outside of acting, how do you like to spend your free time? Any other hobbies, skills, or passions to share?
Being with friends/family right now is my priority. I didn’t get to see them while out in Canada, so spending as much time with them as I can is the goal. Crocheting and photography are what I find myself interested in the most this summer. Photoshop is surprisingly a lot of fun when you mess with it, especially if you mess with faces. I like to do my brothers. Shh, don’t tell them. They don’t know.
