Julia Jones, a Boston native, is best known for her role in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.” She has been in Mandalorian and recently in Goliath, the Amazon Prime show along with Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton. Did you always want to be an actress growing up?
Pretty much. I started doing school plays when I was 8 and had a real clarity around the idea that I wanted to act professionally.
How did you get your start, and did you have any formal acting education?
I did plays in community and regional theaters growing up. I was involved in a number of theater programs and also did some commercials. I went to college in New York and started working with an acting coach named Susan Batson. I studied with Susan intensively and she encouraged me to get an agent and start auditioning. I did a mailing to agents in New York and wound up doing a scene from “Good Will Hunting” with a friend from college in one of the meetings. That's how I got my first agent. A couple of months later I was cast in my first independent film.
How does it feel to work on a sequel to a huge series like Dexter? Do you feel pressure to deliver something as impactful as the original?
I tried to stay focused on bringing as much as I could to my character, while serving the story at hand. I was conscious of the attempt to pick up with Dexter and to have him feel like the character so many people had come to know and love, but also to put him in different surroundings and circumstances than what he experienced in the original series. Angela is firmly a part of this new iteration of his world, and I found that creatively liberating.
What is the one thing you want viewers to take away from your character in “Dexter: New Blood?”
I would just hope that people relate to her and care for her and can identify with some of the challenges she faces.
You have played so many, different roles over the years. How do you distinguish yourself as an actress and not as a specific character whom you played?
To some extent that seems totally out of my hands. I do try to take different kinds of roles, ones that I feel like I can do something with, so that there is variety in my body of work. I think that helps.
What is your dream role? Is there an actor or producer you would love to work with?
Matt Damon. I've always wanted to work with Jason Bourne.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to an aspiring actor?
Trust your instincts.
Who inspires you?
Lisa Joy Nolan, Sierra Teller Ornelas, and Bryce Dallas Howard, to name a few.
What's next for you? Do you have anything exciting happening in 2022?
I am currently working on season 2 of Peacock's Rutherford Falls. The show is funny, smart, important, and is made by the most talented and wonderful humans. Very exciting.
