How did you first step into the world of acting?
I started singing and dancing straight out of the womb and to make it a real ménage à trois, I knew I had to learn to act. What’s strange about acting is it’s the most amorphous of the three. You can either do a pirouette or belt a C. Or not. But with acting, it isn’t as cut and dry. So, I never really said I was an actor until I was 11 and played ‘Marta’ in the Sound of Music. She’s the one with the pink parasol. I felt very proud of my work. Too proud, you might say (which, I think, worked for the character).
Who is your biggest inspiration?
Meryl, Laura Linney, Annaleigh Ashford. They’ve straddled the theater/on-camera worlds really beautifully. Heroes also include Sondheim – my best friend, - Bella, Babs, Annie Ernaux, Miranda July, Chloë Sevigny, and my mom.
What is the collaborative process like when working alongside different directors and actors?
You kind of have to feel a vibe. I don’t know what ‘my process’ is and wouldn’t dare try to explain such a thing. There are some actors/directors who will love you if you get them home for dinner by 7pm with their families, and there are some who would like to analyze the scene, create a dynamic and pace that is made on the same soil you’re on. I think both are worthy and somewhat earned. I try not to take it all so seriously and remind myself that the moment of creation is really why I do this, so enjoy the variety of collaborators.
How do you step into and prepare for a new role?
Well, ‘Cher’ was an outside-in role. You put on a black long wig and a sequin vintage Bob Mackie get up and you’re halfway there. ‘Lucille Frank’ in Parade was inside-out. What is a Jewish southern woman facing in Georgia at the turn of the 20th century in a hard marriage? I read many books and spent a lot of hours just kind of sitting with her. For Grotesquerie, the show was generally uninterested in the background that brought ‘Megan’ to the sisterhood. Ryan Murphy and I were inspired by Squeaky Fromme, so I watched a massive amount of cult docs until I couldn't sleep and started to have to make some better life choices. I think it’s different every time. I am always unsure until they call the first cut, or you have that first exchange with an audience, and then I can decide if I’m on the right path.
During your career, was there a specific role that steered your drive for acting?
I think when I played ‘Nellie’ in South Pacific with my community theater program, Kidz Theater, I was sure I wanted to be a “real actor”. I copied Kelli O'Hara’s voice lilt for lilt (“only a cockeyed OP-timist!”), and then tried to figure out how to make it my own. I never thought about homework during a song or that I was jealous of my friend. I was in the moment: floating, storytelling. I chase that feeling still to this day.
What is your character on Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie like, and how were you able to connect with them?
I play ‘Sister Megan,’ a nun and journalist who covers crime. A bizarre duo, I know! She ends up working with ‘Lois’ (Niecy Nash), the lead detective on a religiously themed murder case because of her knowledge on all the references being made. She is working with and for the priest. They both believe that documenting the grotesque will bring more people to faith and to their church, and throughout this work, she becomes destructively obsessed with him.
Is there a specific memory on set of Grotesquerie that stands out to you?
My favorite week was shooting episode five. We shot in extreme heat in the desert, working on a oner (a shot filmed without cutting) and it was a really risky, fun, satisfying week. I loved watching how it all came together and feel very proud of that episode, all the people who made it happen and all the popsicles we ate.
Are there any projects you are ecstatic about, and can share with us?
I just finished shooting an indie movie in Brooklyn, Our Bodies & Other Shames, about girlhood and it was incredibly creatively fulfilling. So that!
What is the biggest challenge you have encountered throughout your career?
Thinking I am a sham! Being a hard worker is the only reason I am here, which is mostly true but also, I would like to believe one day that there is some experience that will carry me through, that I can rely on myself.
What are three of the most significant lessons you have learned in the acting industry?
1) Surprising myself is the best so try to do that sometimes; let go of the work.
2) Ask questions to the people I think are great.
3) I do not have to feel good about my work or believe in myself fully every day, but I do have to keep the channel open, find aliveness, and be aware of what moves me as an artist and human.
What continues to inspire you in your work?
Watching movies. It’s endless, magical, and safe. I am going to go watch one right now.
