New York Art Book Fair Event

Founded in 1976, Printed Matter, Inc. is an independent non-profit organization whose goal it is to distribute artists’ books, with understanding and appreciation. With the New York Art Book Fair, the company brings together artists’ book publishers not only to distribute their work, but also to make connections and build relationships with the community at large. The Fair originated in 2006 and continues to thrive. This year the book fair took place from April 25-28, right around the corner from Printed Matter’s bookstore.

Opening night kicked off on April 25, from 6-9pm, featuring performances by Embaci, LYDO, and Raymond Pinto. Vendors were set up across all four floors, with performances happening on the rooftop. Although artists’ books were aplenty, the selection didn’t just stop there. Zines, magazines, records, novels, clothing, and other bits and bobs were also there to tickle your fancy. The same way New York City brings together people from all walks of life, Printed Matter, Inc. did the same with the selections offered. It was inspiring to see how many exhibitors featured works that directly reflect society today and the challenges that are faced around the world.

Vendors were incredibly kind and willing to answer any questions one might have while flipping through the pages of their enticing books. Sure, there were tons of options that you could check off your wish list, but you were also constantly presented with things you didn’t even know you wanted. Regardless, the choices were endless, and full of coffee table books that you’d actually want to pick up and flip through, instead of letting them collect dust.

The Printed Matter staff kept all its moving parts running smoothly and Don Giovanni Restaurente served an assortment of bites, both savory and sweet. Overall, the event was an art and book lover's dream, but also perfect for anyone wanting to try something new, while supporting their local community.
