New York Fashion Week, Snow Xue Gao
On September 13, Snow Xue Gao turned the sidewalk outside her flagship store into a runway for her Spring/Summer 2023 collections. As her first runway show since the Fall/Winter 2019 collection was presented at the Museum of Chinese in America, the location for this show had to be equally significant. Located on Bowery Street at the intersection of SoHo and Chinatown, Gao’s flagship store is a further extension of her brand’s influence of East meets West. Based in New York, but raised in Beijing, Gao’s aesthetic reflects a mix of both cultures.
In addition to her background, this collection was inspired by the people of her neighborhood. Gao often spends time in her store observing what people are buying and wearing, giving her a unique perspective of what will resonate with her customer. Modern corsets and miniskirts were shown alongside classic silk dresses, all donning her signature bright florals. The pieces were a masterclass in print mixing as traditional Asian florals were patchworked with abstract geometrical shapes in perfect harmony. The playful prints are juxtaposed with asymmetric tailoring and effortless draping to create a collection that blends the old and new, the casual with the avant-garde, and the Eastern influences of her childhood and the Western styles of her present.
