NY Based Sustainable Designer, Randy Luna
Sustainability is one of fashion’s biggest buzz words at the moment, and while many brands talk the talk, very few actually walk the walk. At Randy Luna, the designer and his team believe in making a difference. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, as they say, and Luna breathes new life into discarded items by turning them into stunning pieces of jewelry and clothing. His collections are genderless and work in harmony with the natural movements of the body, while weaving the most beautiful stories that will stand the test of time.
Growing up in New York City and raised by strong, fashionable Dominican women, Luna was surrounded by a melting pot of cultures and inspiration. Not only do his pieces recycle his own history, but that of the city around him. Tailor made and guaranteed to help you boldly express yourself, his work is begging to be worn. Recently, Luna was cast in E!’s OMG Fashun! hosted by Julia Fox and Law Roach and described the experience as surreal, yet his manifestations for the future involve even bigger dreams and goals. With his talent and passion, there is no doubt that “Randy Luna” is a name that is about to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue.
Your journey as a creative began with theater and choreography, but what made you want to make the transition into fashion?
Picture this: me, teaming up with indie singers as their choreographer and creative director. Next thing I know, photographers and stylists are knocking at my door, eager to feature my designs on some seriously talented people. It was like finding my tribe and falling head over heels in love with design all over again. And hey, despite the crazy demand for my designs, my heart remains firmly rooted in the arts. I'm still involved, as an actor and mentor, choreographing musicals and guiding some seriously awesome students with special abilities over at Parkwest P.S. 138M in District 75.
For more context:
“District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as:
● Autism Spectrum Disorders
● Significant cognitive delays
● Emotional disabilities
● Sensory impairments
● Multiple disabilities”
I imagine having experience with movement gives you a different perspective of the body. How has that influenced your design process?
You see, I've got this special knack for understanding how the body moves and grooves. It's like I speak the language of form and flow fluently. That's why my designs are all about embracing versatility and letting your true self shine. Designing is choreography to me. Think of it like choreographing a dazzling dance routine – each piece tells a story, communicates a feeling, and bursts with vibrant energy.
You donate 10% of the proceeds from every product purchased– are there any specific causes you focus on?
I'm all about supporting causes close to the heart, like alcoholism and Down syndrome. Those support groups for alcoholism, they're like lifelines for people fighting the good fight against addiction, plus their loved ones who are right there by their side. And let's not forget about the incredible advocacy groups championing Down syndrome awareness. These heroes are spreading the word, building acceptance, and offering priceless support every step of the way. I’d like to pledge to an organization whose mission aligns to this.
You grew up in the Lower East Side which historically had a large Latin American presence (Loisaida), prior to gentrification. Are your designs influenced by your upbringing and do you use them to help keep that culture alive?
My Latin heritage runs deep, from the rhythms of the music that filled my childhood to the warmth of the Catholic church where my grandma raised me. And oh, the pride we have in our Dominican culture – it's like a spark that ignites our souls! Growing up, my community was a vibrant tapestry of cultures, races, and backgrounds. My Asian neighbors, the Chow family? They were like my second family, showing me the beauty of their traditions and embracing me as one of their own. So, when you look at my designs, you're not just seeing clothes or jewelry – you're seeing a fusion of my life experiences. It's like my Dominican roots colliding with the electric energy of New York City and the majestic vibes of those kingdoms I used to read about in school or admire in the architecture of old churches. It's a whole vibe, and I'm here for it.
Are there any designers you’ve been influenced and inspired by?
Absolutely. Alexander McQueen – the master of storytelling, the king of visuals, and the ultimate risk-taker. And then there's Schiaparelli, bringing that chic architectural vibe with avant-garde designs that just scream "wow!” Can you imagine being in the room where it all happens with Team Schiaparelli? I'm talking about seeing the magic unfold from concept to runway – now that's everything!
You pull inspiration from history, like Greek mythology, the Renaissance, and Ancient Egypt. Whose a historical figure you’d love to design something for, and what would it be?
Right now, if I could pick anyone, it'd be the fabulous Michelle Obama, our trailblazing African American First Lady. I'm picturing her in this stunning satin black pencil dress, complete with a flowy, carefree chiffon. And let's not forget the pop of color and sophistication with that asymmetrical green and gold necklace and earrings. Yes, I see it. Now, if we're rewinding the clock, the Mirabal sisters it is, better known as The Butterflies. These fierce ladies were the epitome of courage and grace before their time. Their design, that would be a mystery.
Upcycling is a large part of your design process, giving new life to pieces that have been otherwise deemed no longer needed. Why is sustainability important to you, and how do you make sure the pieces you create stand the test of time?
We need to treasure and preserve the soil we live on. Sustainability is just one of the ways in which I can do my part as a designer. As I like to say: Re-Use. Live-On. Take-Part. Art has substance and lives on forever. My designs stand the test of time because they are timeless pieces.
Recently, you were cast in OMG Fashun! hosted by Julia Fox and Law Roach, where the theme of your design challenge was “junk in the trunk.” Being that you’re no stranger to using recycled materials, was this challenge a breeze for you or did it make you sweat a little bit? What was it like designing for Julia, and being judged by her and Law?
Being judged by Law Roach, Julia Fox, and being on E! all at once—what a surreal combination! I used to tune in to E! religiously for the red carpets and Fashion Police, and now here I am on E!. Filming OMG Fashun! was a revealing experience for me as I realized I'm typically an introvert when it comes to my design process, keeping it private until completion. So this new setting was a whirlwind—nerve-racking, shocking, incredibly happy, and surreal. It’s a moment in time, an experience I will never forget. To be acknowledged by Law Roach, Julia Fox, and E! brought tears of joy. What a cosign. Working with Law Roach has been a dream I've been manifesting, especially for Zendaya to be wearing Randy Luna. He truly lives up to his title of the Image Architect, setting the law in fashion.
As you yourself have said, fashion has no gender. Oftentimes when we see “unisex” collections they tend to be gray and shapeless, but your work is far from that and is far more refreshing. What would you like to tell someone who wants to be bolder in their self-expression, but is too scared to take the first step?
Be grounded in who you are and what your soul is telling you. Trial and error brings out the most beautiful things in life. Live in the moment, explore, create, imagine, embrace with love, and let your inner child be free to express who you are. Love breaks barriers, be all that you are and remind yourself: What legacy do you want the world to share about you?
Your work has been featured in PhotoBook Magazine before, but what was it like being featured yourself this time?
Blessing on Blessings. Oh my goodness, can we just take a moment to celebrate the sheer awesomeness of PhotoBook Magazine? They've been the ultimate cheerleaders for my brand journey. I remember the first time when I found out Mike Ruiz snapped pics of my designs for their editorial. Mind. Blown. And let's not forget about the incredible styling magic by Alison Hernon. Fast forward to today, and guess what? Yours truly got a spotlight feature. Pinch me, I must be dreaming! What an honor. A huge shout out to the entire dream team at PhotoBook Magazine for always lifting us artists up, giving us a voice, continuing to build community and spreading so much love and awareness. You all rock! #grateful
Theorist Roland Barthes wrote, “Fashion is a system of meaning that constantly transforms signs from one era and context to another, creating new meanings" What would you say your designs are communicating?
Irresistible power and allure, history with contemporary flair, cultural richness with boundless creativity, and fashion with bold expression. These are not just designs—they spark conversations and ignite storytelling moments wherever they go.
What does the future hold for Randy Luna? Where’s your design process taking you next?
I'm thrilled to announce the launch of my very first Sterling Silver Ring collection, coming soon. And as you know, I’m no stranger to diving into the world of sustainability, so I’ve designed an upcycled collection made from repurposed shopping bags, can’t wait to share! The future? Oh, it's looking lovely. I'm already envisioning and manifesting some collaborations with major companies. And yes – I'm talking about two ends of the spectrum here: Target and Schiaparelli. From everyday essentials to high-fashion royalness, the sky's the limit.
