Sneak Peek into Death and Other Details
Aboard a luxurious ocean liner, the characters in Death and Other Details look polished, with their old money family names, poise and sophisticated looks. But beneath the surface, complicated dynamics bind them together in a tense web, with everyone hiding a secret. From business deals and secret flings, to hidden safes and hidden pasts, nothing is as simple as it seems aboard the Verona. Imogene Scott (Violett Beane) finds herself as the only suspect when a man is found dead in his room. She must partner with the world’s greatest detective, Rufus Cotesworth, to prove her innocence. The problem is that she hates Cotesworth, for failing to bring her answers about her mom’s death eighteen years earlier when Imogene was a child.
The film is set on a luxurious restored Mediterranean ocean liner, with everything coming from before 1955, even the glassware and towels. We get a glimpse into the lifestyle of the 1%, the expensive art on the walls, the expansive deck with a pool overlooking the ocean, and even B12 shot injections from the staff.
The wardrobe was timeless: wide brimmed hats, chic ensembles, and intricate details. It immediately shows who the characters are and the persistence of their smart outfits. Their having fun even on vacation shows how their fun has a side of business too. Imogene’s look particularly stood out to me, sporting a blonde bob with blunt baby bangs. It was a striking look, just like the bold character. As the detective says, “details matter” and it is the details that make this series shine, from the atmosphere-building background music, and emotive close-ups, to the well-considered shots.
I enjoyed the creative illusions, like the opening scene where we see a mansion, only for it to transform seamlessly into a doll house, or what seems to be the sky but is actually a reflection on the water.
With clear motives, intricate backstories and complicated secrets, each character was well-thought out and jumped off the screen. Watch as these secrets come out when the series premieres on January 16 2024, on Hulu.
