Sofia Black-D'Elia, an American actress, stars in the hit Freeform series “Single Drunk Female,” where she plays Samantha Fink, a 20-something recovering alcoholic, who’s come to live with her mother in an attempt to rebuild her life. Sofia is the shining face you see in so many of your favorite shows from “Gossip Girl” to “Your Honor,” the New Jersey native has cemented herself as one of the best actresses on television right now. The comedy-drama returned for its second season on April 12th.

You began acting almost as an adult, what was the experience that solidified your desire to pursue this as a career?
I actually didn’t start acting until I was 17. And it didn’t feel like something I could make a career out of until years later, when I stopped worrying about rent.

You got your start at dancing school. What things have you taken away from and applied to your movement work as an actor?
I was never a very good dancer. I think I took more from playing sports growing up the team mentality, the common goal, the underdog energy. All of it applied to being on a set or doing a play.

What was the biggest lesson you learned while studying under Bill Esper at The William Esper Studio?
Give up, give in, give way. Bill said it to us often and I say it to myself still.

Based on your filming credits, you tend to gravitate more toward television than movies. What is it about working on shows that is so special for you?
I love building a character over time and the sort of sprint within a marathon that is making a series. It’s fun and challenging and like a long summer camp.

Despite being categorized as a comedy, your show “Single Drunk Female” deals with deep and moving subject matter. How do you find balance between being emotionally invested in your character and the circumstances while still taking a step back and enjoying the work?
I really enjoy all of the work equally as long as it’s grounded in something that feels real. It’s particularly easy to enjoy this gig because our cast and crew are incredibly kind and quick to laugh.

What is your favorite moment working on the set of “Single Drunk Female?”
It’s hard to pick a favorite moment, but everything that comes to mind involves Sheedy. She is the most present and generous scene partner I’ve ever had.

Your co-star, Ally Sheedy, has been a legend in so many classic 80s movies, even becoming a part of the iconic Brat Pack group. Has she given you any advice on how to master the art of the coming of age protagonist?
Ally tells me to trust my gut and go for the weird shit - two great pieces of advice for all areas of life.

Who has been your biggest acting influence and who would you like to work with in the future?
My Grandma Joan was the funniest person on the planet. Her influence on me runs deep. Catherine O’Hara is probably number 1 on my dream list but it’s long.

What do you hope audiences take away from not only this show, but from your character in season 2?
I hope people enjoy the show and laugh a little and feel a bit less lonely. That’s all I can hope for.

What do you do to get a reprieve from your busy work schedule?
I’m currently cuddling with my cats and watching a lot of playoff basketball. I highly recommend both.
