Here are the top 8 maximalist and budget-friendly home décor trends that we’ve been seeing everywhere in 2024. While these home accessories are gaining popularity, 2024 may be the year of the anti-trend. So, we encourage mixing-and-matching home décor to discover your unique aesthetic.

1. Layered Lighting

Layered lighting is all about setting the mood in your space. Whether this is through floor lamps, light strips, or sunset lamps, people are saying no to bright white bulbs—aka harsh overhead lights. A recent TikTok shares the ultimate cozy lighting guide. It highlights the importance of lighting, detailing trends such as in light floor lamps, light strips, and sunset lamps to create the perfect vibe in your space.

2.   Bubble Furniture

Bubble furniture are sofas and chairs made in round, bubble-like shapes—hence the name. While this modern home décor is easy on the eyes, it’s not very easy on the wallet. Bubble is a design created by Sacha Lakic that was inspired by natural, mineral forms, and is entirely handmade—which reflects its hefty $13,740 price tag. So, we found a dupe: the Orb Sofa. A sofa that not only comes in an array of colours, but offers multiple sizes such as the three-seater, two-seater, and even single-seater.

3.   Relaxed Seating

On a similar wavelength as Bubble furniture, relaxed seating is taking off. Floor pillows and cushions are being used to bring a touch of exoticism to a space. Moroccan floor pillows are an effective way to maximize your living space—rich in texture and colour these pillows offer seating that is intimate. Actually, floor seating is an art that promotes active and engaging posture, enhances flexibility, and creates a cozy atmosphere.

4.   Mid Century Modern Furniture

Mid-century modern furniture (also known as “MCM Furniture” to the Facebook Marketplace community) is the heart of trendy home décor on Pinterest. It’s the frequent use of wood, leather, and stone that create a warm and inviting feel to any living space. And, the best part about MCM Furniture is the more-used, the better. Yes, vintage is in. It’s been in. And MCM furniture continues to run the show.

 5.   Funky Vases

Vases have always been the perfect way to personalize a home. They’re a vessel for seasonal décor, balance the scale and proportion of a room, and are a great way to display fresh or dried flowers. As 2024 is the year of maximalism, vase arrangements are embracing a fanatical mix of textures and shapes. This means that funky vases of all sizes are trending. While many home design retailers offer a selection of vases, arguably, the thrift store and any second-hand shop is the best way to find unique décor. Basically, the funkier the better!

  6.   Decorative Plants

Plants are the lifeline of home décor. Not only do they provide an aesthetic appeal to any living space, but they have multiple health benefits. Studies show that plants make us happier and improve air quality by removing pollution from indoor air. So, large-leaved plants such as the Monstera are ruling Pinterest home décor—and for valid reason. Any local plant shops are a good resource for greenery. Some additional beginner friendly plants (brown-thumb approved by yours truly) trending in 2024 include succulents, ferns, the money tree plant, and string of pearls.

7.   Neutral Wood Tones and Dark, Moody Greens

No, we didn’t forget about the paint colour trends of 2024. This year, people are moodier than ever. Neutral wood tones and dark greens are providing the depth and complexity that your space has been longing for. A whole home-revamp can be expensive and time-consuming, yet, sometimes all your home needs is a fresh coat of paint to feel more up-to-date.

8.  Organic-Shaped Mirrors

In contrast to MCM Furniture, there has been a surge in popularity of home décor with curves. As people are becoming bolder with their design choices, organic-shaped mirrors are taking over Instagram. While a lot of mirrors sell for hundreds of dollars, Bouclair’s Wiggly Mirror retails for just over $30.

That concludes our list of 8 home décor trends we’re seeing everywhere in 2024 (budget-friendly, of course). As 2024 is the year of maximalism, we encourage you to be spontaneous and bold with your home décor.
