Jack Schlossberg’s Social Media Shenanigans

Jack Schlossberg has captured the hearts of his generation with his entertaining social media presence. He first garnered attention after posting a video singing and dancing to “Ticket to Ride” by The Beatles. Viewers soon pointed out that he was the grandson of former president John F. Kennedy.

Scrolling as far back as 2017, one can find that Schlossberg has never taken himself too seriously on social media, such as when he shared Google search results about the difference between a pond and a lake because “it matters.”

Yet, 2024 seems to be his year with viral moments and TikTok fame. His TikTok and Instagram niche includes him lip-syncing to songs such as Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You,” impersonations, and opening a coconut on the side of the road. Fans proclaim him as “the people's princess” and note his uncanny resemblance to his uncle JFK Jr. Some even compare his eccentric energy to that of his relative Edith Bouvier Beale, also known as Little Edie, for her dance performances in the HBO documentary Grey Gardens (1975).

In addition to his growing popularity on social media, the 31-year-old has recently been appointed as Vogue's political correspondent. Some question his qualifications as a political correspondent given his political leanings and family legacy, Schlossberg has not shied away from criticizing his family members. Last year, he posted a video denouncing his cousin and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “for trading in Camelot and conspiracy theories and conflict for fame and personal gain.” He went on to say, “I’ve listened to him. I know him. I have no idea why he should be president. What I do know is that his candidacy is an embarrassment.” He balanced this serious criticism with humor, in true Schlossberg nature, later posting as a character named Jimmy, calling RFK Jr. “a prick” in a thick New York accent. Instead, he endorsed President Joe Biden. Following the news of President Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 race, he  took to his Instagram stories to praise Biden as “the greatest president of my lifetime.”

Some, including myself, question his reasoning for posting outlandish videos given his family background and his new role in political discourse, however, in his Vogue interview he claims “You’ve got to bring some positivity and good energy to the things you think are important. That’s the only strategy I have.” He bridges the gap between humor and the world of politics, strengthening his relatability to encourage young voters to participate in the upcoming election. Regardless of his intentions, Schlossberg is having his moment this summer, bringing a fresh perspective to the political sphere and social media.
