Alfie Fuller: Deli Boys, Prairie, and Creative Passions

Previously known as Dinah Rutlege in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, talented television and theater actress Alfie Fuller is now taking on the role of Prairie in crime-comedy Deli Boys. Now available to stream on Hulu, the show centers on brothers Raj and Mir, left to take over their father’s convenience store business after his untimely death and finding that he was living a secret crime-filled second life in the process. Fuller finds her place in the show’s wacky world as Raj’s paramour (among other titles), and unsurprisingly dazzles in her performance. Offscreen, she is just as impressive, with jaw dropping interior design skills and an eye for fashion that is often showcased on her Instagram feed. Below are the answers to some of our burning questions about Deli Boys, as well as more about her passions outside of work.

You’ve mentioned that your grandma saw the spark for performing in you at a young age; do you look to women in your life for guidance often?
Absolutely. My relationships with women are the highest currency of my life and it began with my grandmother and her community of friends and mentors. So, from a very young age, I experienced love and support in their purest forms from women. And it may be sheer luck but women continue to be at the forefront of every monumental moment of my life. Women casting directors, show runners, writers and  publicists are the ones who recognize my talent and give me the opportunities to advance my career. The love from the women in my family is so strong and unwavering that there is no doubt in my mind that whatever I want to achieve is possible. Romantic and platonic love from women has altered my brain chemistry and changed me for the  better. Women have elevated my life over and over again.

You play Prairie in Hulu’s Deli Boys, premiering March 6. What are you most excited about regarding the show?
This show is unlike anything that’s ever been on television before so I’m excited for people to witness something that’s truly fresh and original. I’m amped for people to get to know these characters and the actors, too. I have a feeling that audience’s opinions about different characters will shift over the course of the series so it’s going to be very fun to watch that play out in real time. But most important, the entire cast and  crew put their heart and soul into this show down to the tiniest details so the fact that the world will be able to see all of our hard work fills me with inexplicable joy.

Prairie is Raj’s girlfriend and also… his shaman? How would you describe Prairie’s character?
Prairie is my sweet, kooky girl who’s full of surprises. She exists in her own world, seemingly unaware of the stressors of normal people. She believes she has a natural affinity for healing others and dedicates her life to doing that using various holistic practices. Even if other people don’t understand their relationship, she loves Raj for exactly who he is and truly savors the strange little life they’ve built together. And when things get sticky for her, Prairie shows us that there’s more than what meets the eye and she’s not as aloof as people think.

The show blends an interesting mix of comedy and crime. How did you and the rest of the cast maintain the balance of suspense and comic relief?
I think that the writers made it incredibly easy for us and they did a great job of depicting what it’s like when people are in dangerous or high stakes situations. It’s never complete fear or complete sadness. Like, when I found myself on a boat trying to outrun a storm in the middle of the choppy Mediterranean, I should’ve been afraid and praying to all the gods but instead I was cracking jokes and giving that boat captain some of my best material. Sometimes the funniest bits happen in the middle of crisis and Deli Boys definitely shows us that.

What was it like on set, and how was working with Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, and Poorna Jagannathan?
Being on this set was so fun because every single person from cast to crew had such a joyousness about them. I would often go to set on days when I wasn’t filming because it was always such a good time.

Are there any hints you can let us in on as far as what these first ten episodes will hold?
Twists, turns, new loves, heartbreaks and a lot of blood.

Deli Boys is quite a change from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and your theater roots;  how did your approach differ from one to the next?
With every project, I’m attempting to build a truthful depiction of a person so that remains constant no matter the genre but the difference between coming from Maisel to Deli Boys, however, was like stepping off a treadmill that’s going full speed. I was so accustomed to speaking at the cadence which Maisel required that it took me about a week or so to slow down to the speed that Prairie required. Additionally, because I come from the theatre and on top of that, I’m just an animated person, I had to really tone down my grand gesticulations and find the subtle, zen way of communicating as Prairie.

Is there a scene from either project that you remember being particularly difficult? How did you work through it?
Whenever I’m working on a comedy and my character has a dramatic scene, I initially feel antsy about it. I think it’s because I don’t want to be the one who brings the vibe down! There was a scene in Maisel where Dinah showed up to work with a black eye and it was revealed that her boyfriend hits her. And I can’t reveal too much but there are a few scenes in Deli Boys where Prairie has some major drama. These kinds of scenes get me in my head when I first read them but of course, I quickly get over it, realize it’s necessary for the storyline and I go to set, do the work and hope for a truthful execution.

I hear you have a multitude of talents, including home renovation and fashion. What is a passion project, past or present, that you’re most proud of?
I recently renovated my entire apartment myself which included painting 15 foot walls, silver leafing my entire kitchen, resin & marble work, mounting glass, building every single piece of furniture and creating a studio space that can be transformed into a recording, photography or hair/makeup studio. The results are absolutely stunning to the point where people are asking me to interior design their  homes so I’m pretty proud of that. And I have this fashion photo series that I’ve done for a little over 3 years called ‘The Alfits’ that I snap in my stairwell. I have a pretty extensive and impressive wardrobe and I’m not a person who saves an outfit for a special occasion; I wear my pieces. I will wear Loewe to the post office. I’m proud of the series because even though it’s not super fancy, it’s something that I do consistently, it’s gained a bit of a following and people are always telling me how inspired they are by it.

How would you describe your personal style?
I come from a long line of women who love clothing. “Putting that shit on” runs in my blood. My style can range anywhere from something you’d see on a 60s Vegas  showgirl to Vivienne Westwood or R13 inspired streetwear. It’s cheeky and completely instinctual. I almost never premeditate an outfit. I wake up and whatever my hands grab is what goes on my body. I have fun with my style while comfort is not a top priority for me (I wore athleisure somewhere other than the gym for the first time last year; it felt weird), I feel good in my clothes and every time I step out, people compliment or want to talk to me about my look.

If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing?
I think about this all the time. I’d either be working as a fashion editor at a magazine or I’d be a lounge singer in Marrakech. I might still do both.
