Why did you pursue a career in acting? Who is your inspiration, and why?
My interest in this career came when I was three. I was watching The Cosby Show and told my mom I wanted to be inside the box (television) because I saw other kids on TV. The next thing I know, we're stumping the pavement in New York City on the search for representation. My mother has always been my inspiration along with my family throughout my career and they continue to be.
Where do you live now? Do you visit home often? What about your hometown do you think shaped you for who you are today?
I'm based in Los Angeles. I was born in North Carolina, but I call New York City home. Anytime I can get back to NYC, I'm there. When it comes to food, culture, and the hustle, New York City offers the best of the best. I was fortunate to work with great artists in my youth. Performing on stage in the Broadway musical "Show Boat" gave me the best education an artist can get. There's no room for errors. Working under that kind of pressure as a kid taught me a lot. That's just my opinion.
What was your favorite memory of filming The Tomorrow War?
One of my favorite memories from filming was when I experienced an Aurora Borealis in Iceland. I was able to knock something off of my bucket list.
Did you resonate well with your character, Dorian in The Tomorrow War? What was the most challenging thing you encountered while portraying him?
Dorian and I are one in the same in many ways. The cool thing about playing Dorian was the ability to create this character from scratch. Dorian wasn't fully developed when we started filming, but throughout the process, Chris McKay and I would have discussions about the different nuances we could pull out of Dorian. The most challenging part of portraying Dorian was all of the physical activities that came with this role. I feel like we were either chasing or running from aliens every day.
You played a constant role in The Purge films. What were some highlights of being a part of that American franchise production?
I guess some of the highlights that came with being a part of a franchise is that extra, little boost of fame and being able to talk to fans about what they like and don't like is always fun.
Do you play any sports? If so, what kind? Do you follow any specific leagues/ teams?
I've played sports my whole life. Football, basketball, baseball, bowling, and martial arts kept me busy as a kid. I'm into golfing now. Much slower pace and easier on my knees. I'm possibly addicted to it. I'm a San Antonio Spurs fan at heart, and I follow the Yankees. The PGA tour is life.
Have you ever written or produced your own projects? If so, please tell us about it?
I've never produced my own project, but I'm in the process of producing a film with my brother right now. I have about 10 scripts in my computer waiting for me to do something with them. I have three projects at the top of my list and wearing the producer's hat has now placed me in a position to get them done. I would share details, but I'll save it until the projects are ready.
What is it like having your brother, Aldis Hodge, also being a part of the entertainment and film industry? Does it make being a part of that industry easier and more comfortable?
It's great being in the same industry with my brother. We've been able to grow as artists and most importantly, brothers. We've always shared each other's success, and I've been able to learn a lot from him and how he moves throughout this business. Now we are working together as business partners, and we couldn't be happier. Creating with him in this capacity is what we've been working hard for.
How involved is your family with your acting career?
My family is the foundation of my career. If it weren’t for my mom sacrificing certain aspects of her life, I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today. My brother and sister's love and support kept me going when I've felt like giving in and doing something else. They were always there to pick me up when I needed to be.
Are you working on anything that we can look for in the future? Can you tell us what's in store for you in the next year?
I've got a few things cooking in the kitchen. I'm in the process of filming a show for HBO. I can't say what it is, but I'm definitely excited for the filming process and for fans to see it. I'm waiting to hear if the "Good Sam," a CBS pilot starring Sophia Bush and Jason Issacs gets picked up, and I'll just say the writing career just picked up. Stay tuned!
