Koloman, A Taste of Vienna in NYC
Koloman is a restaurant located in the Ace Hotel on 29th street in the Flatiron District, which opened in 2022. I definitely see it as a hotspot. Once entering, its glitzy atmosphere represents New York dining nightlife at its finest. This high-end, Chef Markus Glocker’s French/Austrian restaurant with turn-of-the-century influences is far from being stuffy and pretentious. It has wonderful service and offers cocktails, appetizers, dinner, and more. The restaurant gets its name from the late 19th century Austrian artist Koloman Mosel. You can see the influence of Mosel in the design of the restaurant--from the monumental, transparent, back-lit clock behind the bar, to the patchwork wall coverings and the exquisite ornamental glass above the banquettes.
As soon as I sat down I was offered champagne to unwind and relax. The cheese soufflé is so light and rich, but it's not too filling to have as an appetizer. The salmon en croute was light and tasty and seemed to be a very popular dish. Next came the Goulash, a stew of meat and vegetables seasoned with paprika and other spices. It was worth the wait, tender in taste, and each bite was pleasing, rich, and hearty. I tried their special of the day with a Risotto mix, the rice dish was creamy but somehow light, that I normally wouldn't finish the whole bowl, but did.
For some reason, I never think of restaurants offering Viennese cuisine as place to dine, merely a place for dessert. However, after dining at Koloman I changed my mind.
