Niko Terho, Returns as Dr. Lucas Adams in “Grey's Anatomy”

Niko Terho, a proven talent in the acting world, is best known for his captivating role on ABC’s critically acclaimed “Grey's Anatomy.” With a background that spans both stage and screen, he has quickly made a name for himself through his nuanced performances and dedication to his craft. Raised in Barbados, Terho often spends his free time in nature and uses his platform to advocate for environmental awareness. Now in its 20th season, he returns to “Grey's Anatomy” as Dr. Lucas Adams.

Many actors would consider working on “Grey’s Anatomy to be a dream role. Looking back, what sparked your initial interest in acting?
I mean as far back as I can remember I’ve always been fascinated by films and creating imaginary scenarios. I’m sure a lot of that early influence came from my mum, who was an actress when I was growing up. I remember getting the Harry Potter DVDs as a kid for the sole purpose of watching the “making of” the series. I must have watched the special features ten times more often than the actual movies.

In regard to performing, who are your biggest role models and inspirations?
I have quite a few, but my main inspirations would have to be the likes of Montgomery Clift, James Dean, and Marlon Brando. I just believe the vulnerability they brought to their roles was so revolutionary at the time, and they changed the landscape of acting completely. But, if I had to choose an actor whose career I would most like to emulate, it would be Heath Ledger. The choices he made and the risks he took were so interesting and admirable.

From coming of age rom-coms to now the serious nature of the medical field, how does your role as Dr. Lucas Adams compare to past roles?
In a way they aren’t too different. The main difference is their occupation. I tend to bring quite a bit of myself to each role, at least so far. Lucas maybe has his life together a bit more than my previous characters. But he’s just as clueless when it comes to navigating his love life.

“Grey’s Anatomy” has been one of the most popular shows on television for quite a while now. What was it like getting a role on such an iconic series, and how did the part find you?
It really is a dream as an actor. To get the chance to work with such great material and have it affects  and is watched by so many people. It all happened so quickly. I did the audition and within a few weeks we were on set filming the first episode. It’s been a beautiful whirlwind so far.

The last season ended on quite a cliffhanger. Without (or with) spoilers, what can fans expect from Dr. Adams in the returning season?
The fans can definitely expect to see a different side of Lucas this season. I feel like he really starts to come into his own and stand up for himself. It’s definitely not smooth sailing but that’s how life is. It’s messy and unpredictable and that’s what makes it compelling to watch.

Grey’s Anatomy has a cult following. Can you share any behind-the-scenes moments from filming viewers may not know about?
I’m struggling to think of a specific moment to share. We have a lot of stories but most I can’t mention. I will say that we all truly love spending time with each other. The cast comprises some of my closest friends outside of the show.

When you are not in scrubs on set, you are often found in nature or in the sun. How do you like to spend your free time and days off?
As is probably evident, I love spending time outside. Anything that has to do with nature really. I love to take my dog to the beach, go for a nice long hike or go camping. I think it’s a great way to ground myself and re-energize.

As season 20 is wrapping up, what’s next for Niko Terho? Anything your followers should look out for?
There’s not much I can speak about just yet. But I will say that I’m excited for the future.
