Toni Trucks on Seal Team’s Final Season
Toni Trucks is a multi-faceted actor, Hearing Health Advocate, Death Penalty Abolitionist and Chocolate Eater—as noted in her Instagram biography.
Best known for her role as intelligence officer, Lisa Davis, on the hit series SEAL Team, Trucks shares her bittersweet emotions on the show's highly seventh and final season. “I will definitely miss playing LT. Lisa Davis and that whole world we created,” she reveals. “It’s rare to be able to live in one space like that for 7 seasons. That being said, as more time passes, I do find it easier to look to the horizon. I love this job so whether it is the SEAL Team or the next project, I will be full steam ahead.”
Trucks has a long list of credits including TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson; FRANKLIN AND BASH with Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer; BARBERSHOP with Omar Gooding; MADE IN JERSEY with Kyle Maclachlan; NCIS: NEW ORLEANS with Scott Bakula; and HOSTAGES with Toni Collette and Dylan McDermott, as well as Comedy Central’s CORPORATE. Film credits include RUBY SPARKS with Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan; ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY with Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.
Lisa Davis is a strong female presence in a heavily male-dominated series. How did you approach playing this type of character?
This is not my first time being outnumbered in a narrative so I think I was somewhat equipped going into production. However, I was fortunate in that I was able to draw upon real military women navigating these very spaces. I feel extremely lucky to have had such powerful source material. It was invaluable to my process and no doubt deepened the integrity of my work.
Do you have any behind-the-scenes moments from SEAL Team that were particularly meaningful to you?
Oh boy...our cast was very prank heavy so that has given me lots of laughs. But a really beautiful moment was when we celebrated our 100th episode. We have since surpassed that number but at the time—it felt so special to stop and celebrate that milestone. It was the middle of a shooting day and the producers, cast, and crew all took time to step back and appreciate what we had accomplished. News outlets came and the studio brought down a giant cake with a replica of the C17 set. It was a sweet moment.
Toni, you’ve recently become a mother. Has motherhood had an effect on your career? Did it bring a new perspective to your character, Lisa Davis?
Being a mother has no doubt affected my career for the better. I now have a totally new well to pull from when acting and that can only make you better. My road to motherhood was by no means straight. In the first episode of this final season, my character, Davis, meets her ex-boyfriend’s daughter for the first time. There is this fleeting but heartbreaking moment of longing that rushes over her. The road not traveled...or not traveled yet...I was really able to access that moment in a different way from the other side of motherhood.
As SEAL Team comes to an end, what do you hope audiences will take away from the series?
I hope we have illuminated for our audiences both the complex glory and absolute futility of war. Seeing the full scope of the human experiences that happens on and off the battlefield will hopefully allow people to understand the rejoice and much needed repair that surrounds this community.
You have a very successful acting career to date. How do you believe your experience on SEAL Team has prepared you for your future acting journey?
I am leaving the SEAL Team with a lot of gratitude. I think the biggest way it will impact my acting career moving forward is through the incredible fan base. I hope to carry them with me to my next project.
Some of your previous credits include Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, NCIS: New Orleans, Hostages, Franklin & Bash and more. What has been your favourite role and why?
I don’t think I can pick a favorite. The best is yet to come.
As you look forward to new roles, is there a specific character or genre that you would be interested in exploring?
SCI-FI!! I would love to explore a story that didn’t have traditional confines. Give me outer space, futuristic, Black Mirror, dystopia...I’m ready for the upside down.
You were featured by PEOPLE Magazine in the article “Toni Trucks Says Her Hearing Loss Was 'Ignored' Growing Up. Now She Feels 'Empowered' Wearing Hearing Aids.” How has your hearing led you to be proactive about your health?
My mother always told me, when it comes to health, “You’ll never be sorry you checked.” I think those are words to live by. Hearing health has certainly increased my interest in many areas. I think about sound more than ever. I am now always armed with ear plugs.
What do you wish more people knew about you?
I’m always cold.
