Skinny Scarves Are BACK!
Dug up from the Y2K grave, the skinny scarf is the latest trend from the aughts to be revitalized with a modern spin. First seen on the Miu Miu Fall 2022 runway as the main accessory of a preppy tennis outfit, this indie sleaze red carpet staple has taken on a more minimal, less random aesthetic. The two primary renditions of this accessory are either made of silk in neutral colors that match monochrome outfits or colorful crochet pieces that complete a kitschy look.
Alongside Miu Miu’s callback to early internet accessorizing are Celine, Djerf Avenue, and Orseund Iris in their Fall and Winter 2023 collections. Although the style hasn’t become universally popular like it was two decades ago, fashion followers at all price points are finding ways to incorporate the long, thin strip of fabric into their wardrobes via shopping vintage or crocheting their own. Small crochet brands 2nd Avenue Crochet and Crochet Gal Soph have added skinny scarves to their offerings as the trend extends into their corner of the fashion world.
When the trend first surfaced in the mid-2000s, supermodel it-girl Kate Moss was key to making the skinny scarf popular. Her indie hipster style was sought after by everybody from girls on MySpace to Disney Channel stars on red carpets, and the skinny scarf added a playful element to an ordinary trendy outfit. The scarves in that era were made in various patterns, with lots of fringe and sparkles, referencing outfits worn on and off stage by rock stars like Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, and David Bowie in the 1970’s.
Though outfits previously worn with this now trendy accessory have been made fun of in the time between it being popular, the skinny scarf revival might tell us a bit about where fashion is heading next. Other trends from the mid-2000s such as skirts over pants and slogan tees have made their mark on mid-2020s fashion, making it clear that the trend cycle will push forward into the late-2000s with vests and skinny jeans becoming popular again, an era many of us would like to skip this time around. For now, let us take inspiration from Ashley Tisdale, then modernize the look to fit the fashion mold in 2024.
